UK Asylum Seekers Face 20-Year Wait for Permanent Residency Under New Plan
London, UK — New plans announced by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood on November 17 will dramatically increase the waiting period for refugees seeking permanent residency in the United Kingdom.
Under the new rules, individuals granted refugee status in the UK will now have to wait 20 years before they become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (settled status).
The government is planning this major change to its asylum policy as part of a broader effort to reduce the number of irregular migrants and asylum seekers arriving via small boats across the English Channel.
