Food Safety Alert Issued in Ardahan: Public Warned Over Poisonous Weeds Mixed with Spinach

The Ardahan Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry has issued an urgent warning to local residents regarding recent incidents of poisoning caused by toxic wild plants mistakenly mixed with spinach bundles.

🌿 Toxic Plant Contamination Leads to Illness

In a statement released to the public, the Directorate acknowledged the recent rise in food poisoning cases nationwide, confirming that the cause is the presence of poisonous wild herbs accidentally harvested alongside cultivated spinach. These toxic weeds, which can closely resemble spinach leaves, pose a severe health risk if consumed.

🔬 Call for Thorough Inspection and Source Verification

To ensure maximum food safety and prevent potential health crises, the Ardahan Provincial Directorate stressed the critical need for consumers to exercise extreme caution:

  • Mandatory Sorting: Citizens are strongly urged to individually inspect and sort any spinach purchased or gathered from nature. It is imperative to ensure that no foreign or wild plants are present in the batch before cooking or consumption.

  • Trustworthy Sources: The public is advised to obtain their spinach supplies only from reliable and known sources. They should avoid consuming products with an unknown or questionable origin.

The Directorate concluded the announcement by reminding residents that in case of suspected poisoning or detection of a contaminated product, they must immediately contact the 112 Emergency Call Center or the nearest Provincial/District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry.
