Nationalist Leader Bahçeli Backs Release of Kurdish Politician Demirtaş

ANKARA, TÜRKİYE — In a surprising and politically significant statement, Devlet Bahçeli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and a key figure often referred to as the "Chief" of Turkish nationalists, has expressed support for the release of imprisoned Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtaş.

Mr. Bahçeli, who is also known as a sagacious statesman, stated that the release of Demirtaş, the former co-chair of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) who has been jailed since 2016, "will be a good omen for the future" of Türkiye.

The MHP Chairman made the remarks to journalists as he was leaving his party's group meeting at the Parliament. Bahçeli's comment regarding Demirtaş's potential release has immediately become a central topic in the national political agenda, given the MHP's long-standing hardline stance on issues related to Kurdish politics and security

The statement is particularly noteworthy as it comes shortly after the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) upheld its ruling that Demirtaş's pre-trial detention was a violation of his rights, paving the way for his eventual release.

Zohran Mamdani Makes History as New York's First Muslim Mayor Amid Democratic Wins

NEW YORK — In a stunning victory that has reshaped the political landscape, 34-year-old Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani has been elected as New York City's next mayor. Unofficial preliminary results show Mamdani securing over 50.4% of the vote, making him both the city's first Muslim mayor and one of its youngest in more than a century.

Mamdani, who describes himself as a "democratic socialist," is set to take the helm of the nation's financial capital. His victory is being seen as a major win for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

Democrats Sweep Key Races, Drawing Criticism from Trump

Mamdani's historic win came on a night of significant Democratic success across the United States. The party's strong performance in major elections has dominated the political conversation, serving as the first major electoral test during the second term of US President Donald Trump.

The Democratic sweep did not sit well with the Republican leader. Following the wave of results, President Trump expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that the election outcomes were "not good for Republicans."

The political momentum appears to be firmly with the Democrats as they head into future election cycles, fueled by high-profile victories like Mamdani's in New York.
